Respect

Editing is about respect. Respect for the team, footage and the subject. For ‘Business As Unusual’ eight businesses allowed us into their trade and private lives. Their stories needed care, as much as the audience needed entertainment.

It all begins with an idea.

Operating as an edit producer I was handed the reins on this complex production. With the initial shoots having been completed: I first had to identify the arcs and tangents that would carry the narrative forward. From here, I coordinated with production. I produced scripts, storyboards, and location scout reports, to ensure preparation for the final edit. Laying the foundations to ensure a complete and well rounded narrative.

Maes.

Diana Kakkar, founder of Maes, is one of the heroes of this story for her empathy, morality, and dedication. Her story had so many potential arcs. Arcs of positivity, strife, and adversity. Therefore it was important to look at the aspects that would resonate most with audiences whilst doing justice to Diana, her staff and cause.

Taking pride in your work and leveraging a diversity of skills.

Whittling hundreds of hours of footage down can seem daunting, but bringing a fresh attitude, and a diversity of skills produced a high quality and sysinct final edit. Utalising my passion for research and history I was able to write, storyboard and guide the below sequence prior to the edit. In the edit, using the scope of wide angle drone footage presented the impact that Britain’s mill industry once had, whilst the flutter cuts of modernity brought vitality to a skeletal landscape and remind the viewer there are still people out there destined to change the industry.

Post-Production

As a video editor I leveraged the Adobe Creative Cloud suit of products, namely Premiere Pro. The stability of Premiere Pro allowed for an efficient edit. It made organisation simple and effective and allowed for a creative, collaborative workspace.

Business As Unusual was colored in DaVinci Resolve, and compiled with audio in Premiere Pro.
